Phileas’ Christmas Crackers
It’s not just Jesus’ birthday: it’s exactly a year since Phileas Dogg hit the Internet waves. I, Attlee, and my team of rover reporters, have been bringing you the best dog-friendly destinations, hotels and holidays all year round and, to celebrate, here’s a run down of our Christmas crackers.
Monty’s Christmas Cracker: Ski-ing in Vaujany, France
On our second day, it was time for me to get on the slopes. Non-skiing humans can get a pedestrian pass to ride the lifts, and dogs – of course – travel free. We can only go on the gondola-type lifts though – I’m pretty cosmopolitan, but I’m not sure I could manage a chair lift.
Chalet Solneige: Lieu dit Pourchery, 38114 Vaujany, France. Tel. +33 ( 0) 476 79 88 18 (both Therese and Pieter speak excellent English). Website: www.solneige.com. Prices start from 525 euros per person per week half board, 5 euro/day supplement for dogs. Prices per day available on request.
Evie’s Christmas Cracker: Camping at Blackberry Woods, Sussex
So it isn’t like other places as you get your own clearing in a wood which means it is more private although the twittering birds wake me up very early in the morning. We’ve stayed in Bramble clearing each time but next time I want Humpty Dumpty. It is brilliant for scampering about. Each clearing has a fire – don’t like. But there is a big metal thing for cooking on. Meat at my level – that is brilliant.
Blackberry Woods, Streat Lane, Streat, Nr Ditchling, Sussex, BN6 8RS. Tel: 01273 890035; £5pn per tent plus £9 per person pn in high season. Website: http://blackberrywood.com
Attlee’s Christmas Cracker: Room with a view in Cornwall
Totally amaze-bones room view from our room and the best walks on dog-friendly beaches around.
Lewinnick Lodge, Pentire Headland, Newquay, Cornwall TR7 1QD Tel: 01637 878117; www.hospitalitycornwall.com
Boomerang’s Christmas Cracker: Herding Sheep in Snowdonia, Wales
Thankfully, the chap said that, as I don’t have any training with sheep, I am not, technically, a sheepdog and, therefore, not eligible to enter the trials. Thank Dog – it looked bloody hard work for the 40 dogs who were on trial. They had six to eight minutes to herd the sheep – and they had to keep them in line. Properly in line – symmetrical, like, not squiggly.
Chalet 52, Woodlands Holiday Park and Country Club, Bryncrug, Tywyn, Gwynedd, LL36 9UH. Tel: 01654 710471; website: www.woodlandsholidaypark.co.uk. Chalet 52 sleeps up to seven people and can be rented for £30 a night. Contact: 07831795422.
Ted’s Christmas Cracker: Surfing in Whitstable, Kent
The best pub for us dogs on Whitstable Beach is The Old Neptune – it’s actually on the sand. In the summer, they have barbecues every day – perfect for a handsome fellow like me to pick up some spare sausages from people by pulling hang dog expressions at them.
